Bham Night Scene

I have to say that last night was one of those great, diverse evenings where you don't plan to stay out until 4 a.m., but have so much fun you don't want to go home. And it was one of those nights that reminds me how much Birmingham has to offer.

It was an evening that included four different events, spanning four different parts of the city - Northside, Southside, Highlands and then of course ended in Lakeview. We started our evening at Magic City Art Connection's GAGA for Art Bash - a great mix of art, food & bev, music and a fun group of eclectic people. With it's Lady Gaga theme, people did not disappoint. Everything from bubble dresses to leotards & wigs to a stuffed-animal frog dress - people dressed to impress. I was also intrigued by the venue, the Pecks & Hill Building on Southside that used to be an antiques showroom. They were able to transform it into quite the affair.

We left to stop by the bimonthly Downtowners Social Club at Skylar Lofts on 1st Ave. N. - always a great excuse to catch up with the great, diverse group of people that live downtown.

We went back to Art Bash to see if our friends were still there and I stayed to dance with the girls. Then that moved to a house party on the top floor of the apartment building above Rojo in Highlands (since it was too early for Nana Funks). I was skeptical at first, but when I saw their view, I could have sat up there all night. We danced there for a bit and then decided to take the party to Nana Funks which was packed as usual on a Saturday night, but so fun. They really do play a great mix of old school hip hop, remixed classic rock & new hits.
After about two hours of continued dancing, we decided to end our evening with a drive-by through the new Burger King drive-thru across from St. Vincent's. It was a fun-filled evening that I wasn't planning on and those are the best - a fantastic night with fun, outgoing girls - felt like we were on top of the world...well at least on top of the city with a great view.

Homewood Causes Cavities

What is it with all of the sweet shops popping up in Homewood?!?!

They already had Savage's Bakery and Pastry Arts. First came the Soho Sweets when Soho Square opened and ever since then there has been a sudden boom with the sweet treat trend.

Edgewood Creamery came to Edgewood on Oxmoor Rd., which I think was definitely need. But then Dreamcakes cupcake shop moved in as well. Next thing I know, I'm reading about "Icing on the Cookie" also in Homewood. The kids of Homewood sure are going to make their dentists some money this year.

It's a good thing I a.) don't live in Homewood anymore (and especially walking distance of Edgewood), and b.) gave up sweets for lent.

Back to my Bham Life…

Ok, sorry for being M.I.A. the last…um…month. Sheesh! I was apparently swallowed up by the mania that was Carnival Season combined with the Saints in the Super Bowl followed by a long Mardi Grad weekend finale. Being home in New Orleans for 10 days was amazing though – really recharged my soul. And I can’t even explain how great it was to see that city so happy and so energized.

But now that it’s back to reality, I spent the weekend getting my life back on track and getting organized. So today is back to work and back to the gym (ugh…something I abstain from during my Holiday Season which takes place from Thanksgiving to Ash Wednesday).

I am thrilled though about having an empty social calendar – it’s like a blank canvas which I get to fill with colorful activities and with spring around the corner, Birmingham starts to come alive. Here are a few events coming up that I’m excited about:
